Imagine an autumn evening in 1957.

A dark sky with thousands of stars hangs over the city.

Everything looks as usual, but something amazing has happened today.

On October 4, Sputnik 1, Earth's first artificial satellite, was launched in the Soviet Union.

It was a small metal sphere with four long antennas.

It orbited Earth, completing one orbit in about an hour and a half.

Before then, people had only dreamed of flying into space.

And now the first human-made object was orbiting our planet!

That evening, people looked at the night sky and thought about the future.

Somewhere high above them, a little satellite was flying.

No one yet knew what discoveries awaited humanity.

But now journeys to the Moon and other planets no longer seemed impossible.

That was how the space age began.

The first cosmonauts, flights to the Moon, and new discoveries lay ahead.

That night, the stars did not get any closer.

But humanity took its first step toward them.
