During a trip around Russia, I decided to have lunch at an ordinary cafeteria.

It's a place where you can get a quick, inexpensive meal.

I went inside and immediately noticed the delicious smell of home cooking.

At the entrance, I picked up a tray and walked along the long counter.

Behind the glass were dishes of borscht, salads, buckwheat and mashed potatoes.

Everything looked so delicious that I didn't know what to choose!

I asked for borscht, a meat patty with mashed potatoes and a salad.

Then I noticed a berry compote drink and decided to get that too.

It seemed my lunch was getting bigger and bigger!

I paid at the till and sat down at an empty table.

Cafeterias usually don't have waiters.

Customers choose their own food, pick up trays and find seats.

The borscht was hot, the meat patty was juicy, and the mashed potatoes reminded me of home cooking.

Around me, people were having lunch, chatting and taking a break from work.

Just as I was about to leave, I noticed some fresh pirozhki (small filled pastries) on the counter.

I think I know where I'll come for lunch tomorrow!
